The (Non-) Women of Rock

After being ripped from a very pleasant dream this morning by the screaming of my alarm, I do my usual and turn on the TV to become somewhat coherent again. (Those of you who have woken me up by calling on the phone understand this fully.) There was some show on talking about the women of rock and a special from Rolling Stone. Cool, or so I thought. After the yabbering commercials are completed, the segment returns to state the covergirls - last of which were Tina Turned, Madonna and Courtney Love back in '97. Is is someone actually valid as a "rock" musician??? OH OF COURSE NOT!

Britney Spears - will someone please get rid of her already!
Mary J. Blige - OK not my piece of musical cake but isn't she R&B or something along those lines
Shakira - I'll give them that one. She actually plays an instrument and does have a bit of a rock edge.

C'mon though, if this is the essential grouping of "women of rock,"
I'm ready to turn in my guitar. OK, maybe not but it sounded cool. At least Avril Lavigne is included - though in the inside of the cover supposedly w/ Alanis Morrisette (another who I think should just stop - she was cool pre 2000, actually I think twas before I was in hs more reasonably.)

So this is the new evolution of music? Please... why not have it be something like, I'll include Shakira to please the RS "almighty ones," Michelle Branch - she's collaborating w/ Santana for heaven's sake so she has the credibility, Avril Lavigne - despite some people and their crabbing about her she is actually quite talented, & Vanessa Carlton - if Britney is rock then she can be esp w/ that beuteeeefully haunting rocked out/vamped out cover of Paint it Black.

::Sigh::
